Preventative Care
Preventative Care
Preventative dental care is a top priority in our office because it plays a crucial role in maintaining long-term oral health. Regular check-ups and cleanings help identify and address potential issues early, before they develop into more serious problems that may cause pain or require extensive treatment. We provide comprehensive preventative care for patients of all ages, supporting the oral health of the entire family. During these visits, we carefully evaluate diagnostic X-rays, perform thorough visual examinations, assess gum health, and examine the bone support of the teeth and jaw. We also offer oral cancer screenings upon patient request, helping to ensure a proactive approach to overall oral wellness.
Preventative Cleanings:
A preventative cleaning, also referred to as a “regular cleaning,” is typically recommended every six months, or twice per year, to help maintain optimal oral health. However, some patients may benefit from more frequent visits every 3–4 months based on their individual dental needs and risk factors. During these appointments, plaque and tartar buildup are professionally removed to help prevent the progression of gum disease, as these deposits cannot be eliminated through regular brushing and flossing at home. Surface stains are also addressed, and the teeth are carefully polished to leave the smile feeling smooth, clean, and refreshed. Routine cleanings play an important role in maintaining healthy teeth and gums and supporting long-term preventative care.
Fluoride application:
Fluoride application is a preventive treatment that can be beneficial for patients of all ages, and numerous studies support its role in strengthening teeth and helping reduce the risk of decay. While we understand there is some controversy surrounding fluoride and that it may not be every patient’s personal preference, it remains widely used in dentistry as an effective protective measure. Fluoride is also naturally found in many foods, drinking water, and toothpaste, and plays an important role in supporting strong teeth and healthy bone development. When applied professionally, fluoride helps reinforce enamel, making teeth more resistant to acid attacks and cavities as part of a comprehensive preventative care routine.
Sealants:
Fluoride-releasing dental sealants are a preventive treatment designed to help protect teeth from decay in both children and adults. These sealants are applied only to unrestored teeth that do not have existing fillings or decay, most commonly on the chewing surfaces of back teeth where grooves can trap food and bacteria. Once applied, the sealant forms a protective barrier over the enamel and gradually releases fluoride, which helps strengthen the tooth structure and reduce the risk of cavities over time. Sealants are especially beneficial for kids as their newly erupted permanent molars are more vulnerable to decay, but adults with deep grooves in healthy teeth can also benefit. This simple, non-invasive treatment is an effective way to support long-term preventive dental care and maintain healthier smiles.
Night Guards and Day Guards:
Night guards and day guards are custom dental appliances designed to help protect teeth from the damaging effects of grinding and clenching, whether it occurs during sleep or throughout the day. These devices are especially beneficial for patients who experience symptoms such as waking up with headaches, jaw soreness, or migraines, which are often associated with teeth grinding or jaw clenching. By creating a protective barrier between the upper and lower teeth, guards help prevent further wear, chipping, and long-term damage to the teeth and jaw joints. They are most commonly recommended for adults and teenagers due to better compliance, although children can also grind and clench their teeth. Night and day guards provide an effective, non-invasive way to reduce strain on the teeth and support overall oral health and comfort.
Oral Cancer Screenings:
Oral cancer screenings involve a more thorough and focused intraoral examination designed to evaluate both the soft and hard tissues of the mouth in greater detail. While a general assessment of the oral cavity is always completed during routine dental exams, an oral cancer screening goes further by carefully examining areas that are not always easily seen or routinely evaluated, such as the floor of the mouth, as well as performing palpation of the lymph nodes, salivary glands, tongue, and surrounding tissues to check for any abnormalities. This more specific evaluation helps identify early signs of potential concerns that may not be immediately visible or symptomatic. If any areas of concern are found, the findings are reviewed with the patient, and a biopsy may be recommended when necessary for further diagnosis. Early detection through regular screenings plays an important role in supporting overall oral and systemic health.
